Employee Handbooks

Why Have Employee Handbooks?

The communication in an employee handbook is designed to acquaint your employees with information about working conditions, employee expectations, employee benefits, and some of the policies affecting his/her employment. It should describe many of his/her responsibilities as an employee. The employee handbook should outline the practices and personnel policies developed by your company to communicate with your employees a general understanding of your work environment.

The continued success for every organization depends in large part on its employees. The value of good relations with employees, as a sound business practice, is in the best interest of every organization. To a very large extent, a good relationship means good communications (verbal and written) up, down, and sideways throughout the organization.

No employee handbook can anticipate every circumstance or question about policy. As your organization continues to grow, the need may arise from time to time to revise, supplement, or change when appropriate. Nothing in a handbook should be relied upon as a guarantee for certain privileges, working conditions, or continued employment.

The regulatory complexities of being an employer have created a workplace environment that compels written policies from the employer communicating compliance to Fair Standards Labor Act (FSLA). The employee handbook can also be an invaluable tool in establishing standards of employee expectation and employee conduct, further reducing company litigation liabilities in matters of dispute.

The successful business operation and reputation of every organization is built upon principles of fair business dealing and ethical conduct of its employees. Careful observance of the spirit and letter of all applicable laws and regulations, as well as a scrupulous regard for the highest standards of conduct and personal integrity will inspire your employees to maintain that standard with your customers.
